Zinc oxide is a naturally occurring mineral that has been used on the skin for generations. Traditionally recognized for its soothing and protective qualities, it is commonly found in salves, deodorants, diaper balms, and mineral-based sun care. When applied topically, it sits on the surface of the skin, forming a gentle barrier that can help protect against environmental exposure and support irritated or sensitive skin. In sun-focused formulations, zinc oxide is especially valued for its ability to reflect both UVA and UVB rays, offering broad-spectrum coverage.
We choose a high-quality, non-nano zinc oxide that is USP grade, reflecting a commitment to purity and thoughtful sourcing. “Non-nano” refers to particle size, indicating that the particles are large enough to remain on the surface of the skin rather than being absorbed. This allows it to sit gently on the skin, forming a protective layer. Current research suggests that non-nano zinc oxide is considered safe for topical use and is unlikely to penetrate healthy skin.
Beyond sun care, zinc oxide is valued for its versatility. Its mild astringent and calming properties make it especially supportive for delicate or compromised skin, and an easy place to begin experimenting with simple, mineral-based blends.
Herbal Sun Care Balm Recipe
A simple, nourishing sun-care balm made with plant oils and mineral protection. This formula combines the richness of shea and cocoa butter with beeswax and antioxidant-rich oils like red raspberry seed and herbal infusions such as calendula and St. John’s wort to support and soothe the skin. Non-nano zinc oxide forms a protective barrier on the surface of the skin, helping to reflect both UVA and UVB rays. This recipe is formulated with approximately 20% zinc oxide by weight, a level often associated with higher protection in natural formulations.
Some of the oils used here are also traditionally noted for their potential to support the skin during sun exposure. Red raspberry seed oil and carrot seed oil have been reported in preliminary studies to offer higher levels of protection, while shea butter and coconut oil provide more modest support. These values are not standardized or FDA regulated, but they offer insight into how plant oils can complement mineral-based sun care. Together, these ingredients create a smooth, moisturizing balm that offers a simple, hands-on approach to everyday sun protection.
